Remix Friday

April 15, 2011

Well, it’s the end of the week so that’s cause for some celebration.  What better way than with a remix of a well known song?  I can’t think of one.

Phoenix on the heels of the excellent Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix released a remix album of said CD aptly titled Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (Remix Collection).  The types of CDs are always fun albeit I never really have the patience to listen to them all the way through.  Generally though, it’s fun to listen to different takes on the original songs and there are definitely a few gems here.

Enjoy the “1901 Bo Flex’D” remix by Passion Pit.

Just a fun little cover song

April 14, 2011

So as not to spoil the surprise I won’t tell you what it is.  A Rocket to the Moon release the Rainy Day Sessions EP late last year and I really like it.  It’s super chill almost with a bit of a country feel to it – which contrary to my general feelings about country actually works here.

Enjoy.

The Rainy Day Sessions EP for $5

It’s been years…

April 13, 2011

I haven’t listened to these guys in several years, probably since their Telescope Eyes EP first came out.  I am really enjoying their new CD though.  Here is a track off Eisley’s new album The Valley.  I highly recommend this entire CD.

Indie Pop or Euro Pop?

April 12, 2011

To be honest I wasn’t sure how to categorize this next Artist.  Is she indie with a pop edge, Euro-tinged pop or literally straight up pop. Am I just trying to make myself feel better about really, honestly liking this CD?

Check out the song Starry Eyed off Ellie Goulding’s debut record, Lights.  I just think this entire CD is fun and really catchy (also she can legitimately sing).

As an added bonus here is an acoustic version of the same song.

New Format

April 11, 2011

In the interest of being able to continue this blog I’ve decided to use a new format that will hopefully make it easier to stay on top of*.  I will post a song a day (during the week) of bands that I think are noteworthy.  This first song is from the record House with no Name by the band Horse Feathers.

In the interest of full disclosure I didn’t actually know what the word “Curs” meant.  Turns out its a name for an undesirable dog, similar to the word mongrel.

Please turn your attention to the song below, “Curs in the Weeds” by Horse Feathers.

Test Post from Live Writer

Testing out Windows Live Writer’s integration with WordPress.

I’m pretty excited about this and it will hopefully make keeping up with this much easier.

New music. New lifestyle posts. All coming soon.

New Number One Gun CD – To Secrets and Knowledge

January 28, 2010

I’m really going to try and be much better with posting.   I’ll keep this short and sweet.

Check out the new Number One Gun CD.  Start with the songs “The Victory” and “Forest” and work your way into it.

Number One Gun @ Purevolume

He’s got a bit of an early 2000′s emo/indie influence and I’m definitely digging it.  For some reason it seems to work for me today with the snow falling all over New York.

It’s also on sale at Amazon for $5.99 at the link below (if you’re the music buying type…)

He is We

Here is another new band to keep an eye out for.  I know I was telling some people about these guys a few weeks ago but I wanted to make sure people are caught up with the “back catalog” of recent new music.  They just made the front page of PureVolume without a real CD so expect more news on these guys in the future.  I really like “A Mess is Grows” – it has a sweet, slightly old school feel to it.  If you like it, grab the the single on iTunes and support.  Also, if you email them, they’ll send you some of the older songs on their PV page for free.

Coming soon is my first mix (which I think will be an indie-pop mix to make for some fun autumn car rides)

Album Spotlight – White Flags and Silver Spoons…

October 18, 2009

I just wanted to give you something to hold you over before the next full post so here’s a small teaser of the Alexander record “White Flags and Silver Spoons Have to Sleep in Separate Rooms” [Still not sure why we continue to call them "records" but I think it makes me sound more professional, more of an industry insider, ha].

I think this CD is great and there is quite a bit of variation between the songs – in other words, they don’t all have the same sound to them, there’s some acoustic stuff, some straight ahead rock, some electronic grooves thrown in.  It stays fresh and I really like this entire album.  Please check it out if you like the following 2 tracks.

Alexander cover

Buy it!

Obviously, feel free to pick this CD up anywhere anywhere (iTunes, Zune, emusic, Best Buy, Amazon, etc.) but for your convenience I have provided the Amazonmp3 link above [additionally if you click that link and buy some music you will be supporting the blog - and that counts for something, thanks].

Well here it is.  Humble beginnings.  I guess its slightly presumptious to say that as they are only “humble” if you do indeed move on to bigger and better at some point.  In any event this blog will be morphing and changing over time as I decide what I want to do with WordPress either by hosting the page myself or by creating some custom CSS and paying them to allow me to use it.  So all that to say that I know its a little raw right now but that is definitely something that will continue to be improved.

I look forward to being able to drop some new music in your lap that in my opionion needs to be heard.  The aim of this blog is NOT to be a bleeding edge tastemaking tour through the swamp that is underground/indie music.  I.E. if ”math rock” or “so indie they aren’t even a band yet” strike a chord with you, this probably isn’t your blog.  Go read GorillaVsBear or something.   I have created this to (hopefully) reach into the fringes and procure music which will be accessible to people who don’t want to listen to pop radio and crave something more substantial.

That is the thesis.  Please enjoy.
